Frequently
Asked Questions:
Is this an improv
troupe?
No. For the last time.... we are not an improv group! We
are a real professional theater company that
produces original and established works. Bob Mitchell, founder
of the company, was an improv teacher at Southern Illinois
University at Edwardsville in the 1990's, and he took some of
his brightest students and formed the NonProphet Theater Company
in 1995. The first show was a presentation of Too Much Light
Makes The Baby Go Blind by Chicago's Neo-Futurists. We then
followed with three original sketch shows (Militant
Propaganda Bingo Machine; If Our Meat Were Any Fresher, The Cows
Would Slap Us; and Episode I: Balance Of The Farce),
with the Bingo Machine being our most successful. We've
also done two full scale productions (Parallel Lives by
Kathy Najimy & Mo Gaffney and Dark Rapture by Eric
Overmeyer) with more to come. And while there is a fair amount
of improvisation that happens in the show, we are not an
Improv Troupe (not that there's anything wrong with
that). Everything we do is scripted- written by our own company
members and contributing friends.
How
many people have been in the group over the years?
48 cast members & writers & a partridge in a pear tree
Who came up with the logo, and
what does it mean?
The logo was created in 1997 by Chris
Adrienne, when he was going through his African Mask period with
his art. The version you see today is a significantly cleaned up
and altered version of the first. In fact the first on looked
like crap, and the current version looks nothing at all like the
one he came up with first. The second one was slightly better,
but not much. The third version, the one that you see blazoned
on the website is the best he could do. It has no true
symbolism, we all just thought it looked real bitchin'. We're
just lucky that he came up with it before he entered his
"Midgets and Jell-O" period.
What is the air
speed velocity of an un-laden swallow?
Well, that depends if its an African or European swallow.
Please try to be more specific in the future if you want your
questions answered.
Is Travis really
gay?
No, Travis is not gay, but he
plays one in bed.
What is the meaning of life?
42
What are your turn-ons?
We want a man with a slow hand. We want a lover with an easy
touch. We want some one who will spend some time, not come and
go in a heeded rush.
We also love long walks on the beach at sunset; a man who
isn't afraid to cry, but who's not a big wuss; money and power
are also nice. Oh, and jackhammer butt-sex.
Where are
you located?
We are a St. Louis based, professional, theater
company (currently pursuing 501(c)3 status) dedicated to bringing weird, subversive, off-beat, new &
established works to the stage. Our major is sketch-comedy, with
a double minor in plays and improvisation.
What is a
NonProphet?
NonProphetism is a way that we look at life: through cynical,
cold, unfeeling eyes. We feel that there is no subject is taboo
when it comes to theater. We explore these issues, and through
our singular and collaborative writing sessions, we craft a
humorous, yet skewed, version of the world as we see it,
sometimes with serious results, most often with hilarious
results. Either way, if our work makes you think or at least
laugh, then we've done our job.
We also love the groupies and free beer.
